How to get the Java Runtime Engine (JRE)

On Mac OS X Java is pre-loaded so there is no 'with-Java VM' installer - Just insure you have run Software Update and installed Java Version 1.5 at a minimum or SpamX will install but it won't run.

Software Update is the only means of updating the Java version on OS X.

For Operating Systems other than Mac OS X, you can go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
to get a current, system-wide Java Runtime Engine for your system.

At the time of this writing the Sun site latest version is:
"Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0 Update 7"

To check the system-wide Java version:

Mac - Open the Terminal app [in Applications/Utilities]
type:   java -version   and press return

Windows - Open command
type:   java -version   and press Enter

The output will look similar to this in both cases:
java version "1.5.0_06"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_06-112)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_06-64, mixed mode, sharing)

Where the numbers following   java version   must be 1.5 or greater

This also works on *NIX systems and, if you're running those, you know where your shell is.

NOTE: Java 1.5 is also known as "Java 5.0".

As long as a version of Java v1.5 or higher is installed, SpamX runs "Right Out of the Box" on just about anything.

Runs best
